Student leaders and management at the troubled University of Zululand insist final examinations will go ahead – despite the recent violence.
Angry students damaged campus buildings after dean of students Mandla Hlongwane said there was insufficient time to hold student representative council elections this year.
Tensions came to a boil when the SA Students Congress was declared the winner of the SRC elections, after the SA Democratic Students Movement failed to submit its candidate list on time.
Police have been deployed at the institution for the past 24 hours.
Students are expected to start writing examinations next week under a strong police presence.
